Celebrating Achievements and Focusing on the Future for Women’s Health Month

May is Women’s Health Month and there is much to celebrate!  After all, women make the world go round—none of us would exist if it weren’t for women.  There is a greater openness surrounding uniquely female topics once considered taboo, like menopause and miscarriages.  There are more ongoing discussions about inequities females face in their personal and professional lives.  At long last, the nutraceuticals industry is responding with more products formulated for women during various life stages.

However, our advocacy work must continue.  With approximately half the global population being female, women’s health is not only an individual concern but also a societal issue.  Women are critically underrepresented in clinical trials; a study looking at recent drug trial enrollment from 2016-2019 showed only 41.2% of participants were female.  We need more women in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and medicine) to drive important research that leads to better outcomes for women.

At Women in Nutraceuticals, we understand the multiple sides of this issue.  While we exist to get more women in executive roles within the industry, many of us are scientists and professionals driving current trends in women’s health.  We lend our voices to women everywhere in the hope that our unique health challenges will get the attention they so rightly deserve.

In honor of Women’s Health Month, we celebrate recent contributions of WIN members that further our mission—championing equity and equality in science as well as in the C-suite.

·   Dr. Julia Wiebe was one of three featured speakers in a women’s health webinar hosted by NutraIngredients last month.  She discussed the need for equal representation of women in clinical trials—and for more research on women by women—to close the health gap between men and women.  Watch the webinar on demand here:  https://www.nutraingredients.com/Events/womens-health/

·      Pelin Thorogood recently spoke with Danielle Masterson on NutraCast to discuss how Radicle Science supports diversity in clinical trials.  Listen to the podcast episode here:  https://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/Article/2025/04/25/nutracast-pelin-thorogood-on-why-personalized-fits-perfectly-and-dei-matters/

·      Dr. Jennifer Greer sat down with Cassie Smith at SupplySide Connect New Jersey to discuss ingredients that can support women throughout the menopausal transition.  Watch the conversation and learn about her top picks for botanicals that support women during critical life transitions: https://youtu.be/WAfJgVoiBCg?si=plLxRPtpgyAa7Xqf

·      Dr. Susan Kleiner coauthored an article with Dr. Abbie Smith-Ryan and others discussing the importance of creatine in women’s health, especially how it can support muscle health, mood, and cognitive function.  Read the review article here:  https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/15502783.2025.2502094?src=exp-la#abstract

·      SupplySide Supplement Journal’s latest digital magazine issue is all about women’s health and features articles from several women in the nutraceutical industry, including Devon Gholam, Ph.D.  Download the issue here:  https://www.supplysidesj.com/healthy-living/formulating-for-her-women-s-health-supplements-digital-magazine

We thank everyone for their contributions to women’s health, but we also recognize there still is more to be done.  WIN members and volunteers will continue to lift up important voices, fight for equal representation in clinical studies, and empower women to achieve positions of leadership and influence in our industry.

But the question remains—what will YOU do to champion women’s health?  What small action can you take today to ensure the future of women tomorrow?  Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step.  Let our journey into a better world for womankind continue with you.
