Research Focus:
I am scientist at the Department of Nutrition at UC Davis, and Emeritus professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At both institutions, my laboratories investigate the biochemical mechanisms by which selected bioactives, consumed either as part of foods or as supplements, exert positive effects on our health.
Our laboratory uses a number of state of the art research models and techniques, covering test tube experiments through clinical studies involving diverse subject populations including women and men.
The center of our research is on polyphenols, particularly catechins and anthocyanins protecting, heart, blood vessels, and kidney. For decades we have studied the beneficial effects of these bioactives which are associated with reductions in inflammation and oxidative stress. By elucidating mechanisms of action, it is possible to identify which bioactives are effective and in what amounts these bioactives should be consumed to support healthy aging.
Overall, our findings agree with other laboratories around the world suggesting that consistent intake of dietary bioactives, including antioxidants, can provide significant health benefits and support living a longer, healthier life.
